This article helps to fix an issue in which Windows 10 doesn't install specific drivers for USB audio devices on the first connection.

WriteLog FlexRadio Rig Driver, with one FlexRadio treated as two (2 of 4) WriteLog allows its rig drivers to present to the operator what looks like two separate.

Symptom

  1. To get the WriteLog FlexRadio rig driver to talk to your radio, use WriteLog’s Setup/Ports dialog and change one of the rows to “Flex-6000 series.”. For WriteLog versions 11.26 and older: avoid using the bottom row for Flex. Those versions have a bug that fails to save/restore the front panel position for that row.
  2. FlexRadio Systems announces the immediate availability of SmartSDR v2.4.10. SmartSDR v2.4.10 is a special 'interim' release. This release is intended primarily only for users who have been using SmartSDR v2.4.9. SmartSDR v2.4.10 is the SmartSDR v2.4.9 software with the SD card fix, the TLS fix for software licensing, and the updated DAX drivers.
  3. Install the device-specific driver (see Method 2). Open Device Manager. Right-click (or tap and hold) the name of the device, and then select Uninstall. Restart the computer. When it restarts, Windows will try to reinstall the device by using the device-specific driver.
  4. When asked which driver to install you probably want the objfre one, it does not have the debugging stuff the checked one does After rebooting look in device manger, under multiple port serial adapters, it should show N8VB's vCom driver without any red or yellow decorations. Tell HRD to use one of the ports, tell SDR to use the other.

When you connect a USB audio device to a Windows 10 Version 1703-based computer the first time, the operating system detects the device but loads the standard USB audio 2.0 driver (usbaudio2.sys) instead of the specific device driver.

Cause

This issue occurs because the USB audio 2.0 driver (usbaudio2.sys) isn't classified as a generic driver in Windows 10 Version 1703. Therefore, the system assumes that a compatible, nongeneric driver is installed for the device even though the driver is generic.

This issue also causes Windows 10 Version 1703 to postpone the search for other compatible drivers through Windows Update that typically occurs immediately after you install a new device.

Resolution

To fix this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

To resolve this issue, install update 4022716.

Method 2

If the device-specific driver is distributed through Windows Update, you can manually update the driver by using Device Manager. For more information about how to do this, see update drivers in Windows 10.

Method 3

If the device is not yet connected, first install the device-specific driver, such as by using the appropriate installer. After the device-specific driver is installed, Windows 10 will select that driver instead of the standard USB audio 2.0 driver when you first connect the device.

Method 4

If the driver isn't distributed through Windows Update, you can manually reinstall the driver. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Install the device-specific driver (see Method 2).
  2. Open Device Manager.
  3. Right-click (or tap and hold) the name of the device, and then select Uninstall.
  4. Restart the computer.

When it restarts, Windows will try to reinstall the device by using the device-specific driver.

11.Nov.2018 Update

I have lost track of how many updates Microsoft has released since I first penned this article a few years ago. Working to troubleshoot an issue in an online forum I was pleased to find Silicon Labs has continued to release updated drivers.

Reviewing the release notes also available at the link below the latest drivers are certified with later versions of Windows 10.

The version on the Yaesu website is several years old.

Install was easy it updated the existing driver install.

I am running Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit and am able to run the latest version of PCC downloaded from the Yaesu website without any special settings. Ham Radio Deluxe also works just fine with the updated driver.

With all of the security issues folks are having with Windows as Microsoft hardens the operating system. I would recommend following the Microsoft broad recommendation of keeping drivers updated.

I received an email from Ed Ve7ED raising awareness to a new USB serial driver from Silicon Labs, this is the chip which Yaesu uses in the FTDX3000 and I suspect other serial to USB radios and cables. Note if you are using Linux or OSX drivers for those platforms are also available. I have installed the 64Bit driver on my Windows 10 system and no runs, drips or errors.

Also worth noting drivers are available for OSX, Linux and Android if you are for example using FLDigi on those platforms.
